Ortisei, a town in the province of Bolzano, is considered the main village of Val Gardena Situated at an altitude of 1236 m, in the valley floor between the soft incline of Col Rasciesa and the steep wooded hills of the Alpe di Siusi, it is an ideal place for winter and summer holidays. Every year are organised snow ad ice sculpture competitions; a great number of tourists can admire the artistic talent of sculptors.
In semptember is held a famous sculpture fair, UNIKA. During this exhibition the art of wood –carving is introduced to the public.
Nowadays the tradition of wood –carving is still conserving its nature of genuine handicraft, creating original pieces.
Antique wooden toys, as well as paintings of local artists and collections of minerals and fossils, can be seen in the museum located in the “Cësa di Ladinis”: it provides a good overview of the cultural and natural history.
In these places it is possibile to discover the shine and glamour of the past: traditions and cultural patrimony especially of the Ladin language are still alive.
