For those who want to spend their holidays in the mountains in December, Val Gardena has something very special to offer.
From the 3rd to 30th of December 2011 for example the Christmas market on the Dosses Square in St. Christina is held and fulfills peoples hearts with joy during the pre-christmas period. The Christmas Market consists of wooden houses showing handcrafted Christmas items such as wooden nativity figures, Christmas ornaments, Christmas angels, Christmas cakes, tents, glass, knitwear, candles, books, Christmas cards, ceramics, porcelain, and of course mulled wine and hot drinks. This ensures together with the beautiful Christmas songs, sung by various small and large music and singing groups from the Gardena valley, the unique cozy Christmas atmosphere.
Exhibitions of local sculptors and musical entertainment are part of the program. On the 5th of December there will be the traditional feast of Saint Nicholas. This is a magical moment for all children who can not wait that the holy man walks through the streets of the different villages, followed by angels and devils offering candy and gifts.
The exhibition of hand-carved wooden nativity scenes will be on display in Ortisei. The artists of the Gardena Art Association will be exhibiting their works in wood houses, which are placed along the streets of downtown.
The “advent” of Val Gardena is marked by several events, which not only try to highlight the local traditional cuisine, but also offer cultural events. So you can enjoy a tasting of typical Christmas cakes, bacon, cheese and chocolate in Ortisei, or let yourself transport back to earlier days during a visit to the exhibition of the railway in Selva Val Gardena. Several restaurants offer in occasion of these events famous dishes using old traditional recipes.
